House Altona
Respecting the original features of this original Australian home, the new addition provides for a new kitchen, living and dining space on the lower level that opens up to a reconfigured northern yard. A striking staircase acts as a feature and leads to the upper level which accommodates the parents retreat.
A functional pod clad in tactile dark timber battens provides contrast to the original victorian ash flooring and allows for the visitor to get a glimpse of what to expect while entering the house. The pod acts as the connector of old and new; providing a newly created corridor along the facade offering views into the yard.
The constraint of an existing easement is taken advantage of as a functional passageway that leads to the entertaining outdoor deck.
The proposed contemporary material palette is minimal to strengthen the simple and balanced proportions of the facade.
